Northern Prospects ed. by Roger Nash

An Anthology of Northeastern Ontario Poetry

edited by Roger Nash, former President of the League of Canadian Poets

Northern Prospects began as a contest run by Your Scrivener Press in the summer and fall of 1997, seeking potential contributors to an anthology of northeastern Ontario poetry. We received 120 submissions, and awarded three cash prizes and one honourable mention. In addition, the contest judge, Roger Nash, selected 10 further poets to be anthologized. The quality of the submissions was remarkable, a testament to the poetic energy flowing through the vast region from Wawa to Mattawa, from Hearst to Gravenhurst, and north to James Bay.

Poets anthologized include:

Lorraine Janzen, North Bay, 1st prize
Laurie Kruk, North Bay, 2nd prize
Robert Dickson, Sudbury, 3rd prize
Tony Armstrong, Val Caron, honourable mention

Dave Bartlett, Parry Sound
Jennifer Broomhead, Chapleau (now of Ottawa)
Julie Cameron, Sudbury (now of Peterborough)
Monique Chénier, Timmins
Kim Fahner, Sudbury
Tom Gerry, Sudbury
Trevor Laalo, Sudbury
Art Quesnel, Sudbury
Marianne Schafer, Bay of Islands
Mike Shain, Little Current

"an informed, informal tour in a particular area from perspectives few of us know. . . . Readers are encouraged to sample the anthology for themselves."
- The Danforth Review

"It's definitely not the poetry of Toronto's urban sophisticates."
- Don Precosky, Canadian Book Review Annual
